Song Choice 'If you wanna'

The song choice was a process that we had to think about hard, we all said that we didn't want a song that was acoustic because they are too slow and we didn't what to do something like that as we thought it wouldn't allow us to play with the editing enough. We also thought that pop or rap was to specific and had characteristics that we didn't think we knew enough about to do a video of high standard. We decided to do indie rock which we though we knew enough about and the characteristics, we thought we'd be able to play around with the editing as its a good fast song, the type of song also lets us do what we wanted and have a narrative in the video.

The Pitch

The pitch we first decided on has been changed slightly however we stayed with the idea we wanted a narrative in the video. The song 'If you wanna' is about love and a relationship between two people. The primary character in the video is a boy, who is in a relationship with a girl and she doesn't know what she is looking for, she finds herself going through different decades in the 20th Century in order to find her personality for modern day. To show the decades we are going to use a hall and decorate it in different ways to get the feel of each period of time. The scenes that could take part in the halls are discos, with various well known dances, doing this lets us have the shot of the band in the video. The boy in the relationship is also the boy in the band, the idea is to have his character almost transparent, to do this we are going to use the items we have in order to place him in different scenes in the video. The video has to be to the highest standard so a lot of props are going to be used , there has to be use of clothes and other things to make the video as good and real to that decade.

He became very popular ending up with him directing over 80 videos.  then started his own business Some of the videos that he has done are: The videos include many for Creation Records, such as My Bloody Valentine's "You Made Me Realise" and "Feed Me with Your Kiss", and he directed concert videos for The Stone Roses, including Live Blackpool. as he directed videos for the stone roses I thought it would be useful to see what the connotations of this genres video would be.

Some other famous directors are:

Natasha Pincus- Director of 'Somebody that I used to know'

Tulisa - Star Image

The star images of Tulisa is one that has become very popular in the last year. She is part of a successful pp rap group N - Dubz, achieving number ones with them for year, she then went solo and her career flew, receiving nominations for her songs and winning various awards for her looks. She has taken her place on the panel of the X - Factor where she is seen giving advice to the contestants. She is seen by many young people and her image is very important to those that are looking up to her. She has an image that was once seen as a little 'chavy' to people, but has now changed and has become the role model to many young people that see her in the news and on the television. She has had to change her image to appeal to more people and to make sure that she is a good role model for the people that are going to be watching the television and seeing her all the time. As she is on the X-Factor the audience is going to be filled with young people, she needs to show that her image isn't 'the rebel, street kid' that she used to come across as when she first became famous but needs to be the good, well behaved well dressed girl that many girls and young kids can look up to. The industry that she is in changes a lot of people images whether they like it or not, it is changed when either they do something new in their career or if they are elevated and become more famous or if they need to increase their sales for the label, or if their image has been damaged then they need to change the image so that they can get people to change their opinions on the artist. The images are very important to stars and how successful they become is hugely based on what their image is.

Beyonce - Why don't you love me - The application of Goodwins Theory

The Goodwin Theory is that of a video that uses rules to make the video sell as many copies of the song as possible. The first rule it says is that videos demonstrate the genre characteristics, the typical items that you'd see in a certain video are represented in the video. This video shows this, its a song about how she isn't loved by the person she loves, there are typical things such as alcohol, which if used when trying to get over a man, there is sexual clothes that are also used when trying to get over men which could also be seen as ironic as is the fact she is on a bed because the fact that he doesn't love her is a pointer that she won't need the sexual outfits or the bed. There isn't any dance routines apart from when she is doing certain routines when she is doings things in the room or in the workplace, these dance routines are sexual which also shows the use of characteristics as she is showing that she is a sexual person.

There is the theory of the relationship of the lyrics and the visuals, this is also used as when she is sitting on the bed, upset saying 'why don't you love me?' this is a representation of using the visuals to illustrate the narrative. The use of images also pair with the lyrics as she says that she was perfect girl for him as she does all the perfect things that women are suppose to do in a relationship, it then contradicts this idea because she says why don't you love me, so although she loves him and does all this stuff and he doesn't give her his love.

There is also the rule of either amplifying or contradicting the narrative or the visuals. The music and the visuals do have a relationship, the lyrics amplify the types of dances she does and the things that she does because the song is fast the things that she does is fast and has to work with the lyrics. There is also the rule demands that the record label say that they need certain amount of sots of the star as this is the aim of the video. The only girl used in the video is the star so the use of close ups sells the star very well, there is a sense of relationship between the viewers and the star.

The rule that there is voyeuristic use of the female body shows images of the fragmented body of the main star which is a likely characteristic to see in videos that are to do with love or the break-up. This adds voyeurism to the video, this lets the viewers watch her with intent. The theory also says that there is frequent use of notion of looking, this is where the viewers see images through other screens, the videos are also said to have intertextual reference often, this video did not use these rules of Goodwins Theory, however videos should always follow this set out in making good videos.

Labrinth - Express Youself - Intertextuality

Intertextuality is a phrase used when describing the use of other medias or other material in a modern video. This is great way of being able to appeal to other audiences and wider groups of people, it adds a variety of different effect to the type of video adding a use of narrative to the video as the material fits the lyrics. The video I have looked at uses the footage ad characters from famous children's television and film, this adds the type of personality factors to the artist and lets the viewers so what the artist likes and his personal favourites. The use if the children's entertainment footage shows that the song which is made for older people brings them back to their childhood and makes it a more pleasurable video to see. It also makes it more viewable to young people as there are characters that are known by young people making them want to see what their characters are doing. This use of intertextuality entertains the viewers so then bring the people in to see the video.
